The Montreal regulations prohibiting the use of plastic shopping bags come into force on January. 1, 2018.
While the city\'s website says it won\'t be enforced until June 5, the ban is backed by a fine schedule for individuals and companies.
Individuals who continue to provide plastic bags in stores face fines ranging from $200 to $1,000 for the first crime and $300 to $2,000 for subsequent crimes.
Companies found to be in violation of the charter will face a fine of $400 to $2,000 for the first offence and a fine of $500 to $4,000 for subsequent offences.
The ban applies to plastic bags, traditional plastic shopping bags (
Less than 50 microns, about the thickness of conventional black garbage bags)
And oxo-Biodegradable, oxo-
Regardless of the thickness of the shopping bag, it can be decomposed and biodegradable.
The ban does not apply to plastic bags specifically used to transport food to cash counters in retail stores, nor to protect plastic bags from direct contact with other items for hygienic purposes.
