But recently, several U. S.
Cities either ban shop gifting like they do in Los Angeles or start asking people to pay as they do in WashingtonC.
Last spring, New York City became the biggest city in the fight against plastic bags.
The City Council has passed a new law that, starting February, most stores will charge at least 5 cents for disposable shopping bags customers need.
Is it a good idea to charge for disposable plastic bags?

Yes, Americans have experienced a lot of plastic bags. -
Over 100 billion per year
All these plastic bags will cause great damage.
They are trapped in trees, blocking rain pipes and hurting wildlife.
Birds, fish, birds and other animals are caught in plastic bags or mistakenly think they are food and suffocation.
Plastic bags also waste taxpayers\' money.
In New York, we have an estimated $12.
The number of plastic bags transporting 5 million tons to landfill sites per year is 91,000 tons.
In addition, plastic bags often block recycling equipment, resulting in expensive maintenance costs.
That\'s why New York is working with cities across the country and around the world to reduce the use of plastic bags.

But our goal is not to charge.
Instead, to encourage people to use reusable bags, we would like this small fee.
When we went to school we brought our backpacks and when we left the house we brought the keys.

To achieve real, sustainable environmental progress, we need to focus on proven programs that encourage all citizens to reuse and recycle plastic bags.
