Year 12 students Tatiana Schwenzer, Victor Selby, Christina Tran, and destination Boushie are members of the Manitoba Institute for Sustainable life and they have launched a petition to make
Use plastic bags.
They are currently learning about the impact of water and waste disposal on the system.
After a classmate gave a speech on the topic, the group decided it was time to take action and launched an online petition on www. change. org/p/city-of-winnipeg-hey-winnipeg-it-s-time-to-ban-plastic-bags-in-our-
The city of March 15.
They already have more than 600 signatures in just a week.
Schwenzer and Boushie, who work at a local grocery store, said it was common to see customers asking for double packs or one pack for each item.
Although the store encourages customers to use reusable bags for only $1, most people forget to bring their bags.
\"I just want to change it and stop it because it will not only cause problems in the ocean, it will also hurt animals and plastic is in great danger,\" boushie said.
The group believes that the current municipal government is open to their new ideas and wants the petition to be well received by Mayor Brian Bowman and the City Council.
Other communities in the province have taken the lead.
Plastic shopping bags are no longer used by Pas, Thompson, Rapids and Snow Lake.
\"Winnipeg seems interested in that. It (the petition)
\"There are a lot more signatures than we thought,\" Selby said . \" He said the signatures came from people outside the school.
The group says the use of plastic bags has a significant impact on the environment.
According to residential waste reports from the city\'s water and waste sector, Winnipeg produced 174,280 tons of residential waste and 55,010 tons of recycled materials in 2016.
\"Water safety is becoming a big problem,\" Tran explained . \".
\"So if the water is contaminated with plastic and the animals are dying, they can\'t help but filter it out.
Due to the insecurity of the water, we will suffer more floods and we will not have clean water.
\"According to ConservingNow, an organization dedicated to educating people about the harm of plastic pollution to the environment, the average plastic bag use time is only 12 minutes, and only one of the 200 plastic bags is recycled.
Because most of them end up in a landfill or ocean, students are poisoned by animals, especially fish.
Selby says more education is needed on the consequences of using plastic bags.
He did not know how big the problem was until he studied the topic.
Most people think they can be recycled because they are made of plastic, but that\'s not always the case, he said.
With this petition, the group wants to establish a domino effect and inspire others to do the same.
\"We don\'t need a ban if everyone is banned (aware)
Sustainable development, \"Selby commented.
